New boy
« on: 26 March 2011, 10:39 »
Hi guys. I'm Matt and I'm looking at joining the GTI world with a mk5.

Yesterday I test drove a gorgeous 2005 red mk5, 29k miles, xenons, 18" monzas and the full luxury packs. Up at £11995 at the main VW dealer. I was very tempted and it was within budget but researching it online seems to indicate it's probably overpriced by about a grand. Plus looking at a lot of the posts on here, all the luxury extras like the folding mirrors or tyre pressure gauge aren't quite as good as Volkswagen make out! Needless to say, I walked away and will keep looking.

I'd appreciate any thoughts??

Hey mattie.  Yeah that does sound a bit steep!  Remember dealers always charge £1-2k more, compared to private sales.  I paid a little over the odds for my Gti 1yr ago from my local main dealer, partly because of the area I live though.

You should be able to pick up a nice 06/56 plate for approx £11-12k at a main dealers.

It's swings and roundabouts;

The premium of buying from VW get's you a one year warranty and (they where doing a 30 day 'lemon' return), it depends if you think it's worth it.

Private sales, come sold as seen but generally cheaper.

As always buy on condition regardless of the source. I found a red 2006 model from a private seller (18's, lux pack, cruise, rcd500, armrest, mfsw, 7500miles)
for £12,000, expensive but it was basically new!
Now = 2011 MK6 GTI - Reflex Silver
Past = 2006 MK5 GTI - Tornado Red and Solid Black

It could be worthwhile putting in a lower offer since it's a buyers market at the moment.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Hi Mate,
