N/a Engine selection...
« on: 16 March 2005, 18:18 »
Hey peep's just wonering on your opinions really...

I've got a 1272 87 (f) golf mk2 and wanted to swop the engine, but which engine should I go for.

It has to be N/A and the car is going to be used on the track/road and general B road driving, I was looking at a 1800 KR but in comparison to the ABF they are suppose to be gutless.

So, what engine iwould be a great all rounder with plenty potential?

unless you've spent loads of time and money on the cosmetics of the car it'd be worth selling it and getting a gti. you'll have to upgrade so much to match the extra power of the engine it'll be alot cheaper in the long run to get a whole car.

I know what your saying matey and it would make life a lot easier but the only reason I want to keep this particular shell is purly because it has no sunroof and is in an ideal (rot free) condition.

The biggest let down of the golf GTI is the weight, my idea was to start with a base shell remove any excess metal (seat mounting's,roof support etc) to get the weight, then get an engine transplant thus power up and weight down which would be fun. I've thought about buying a mk1 as they are indeed a lot lighter, but the price for a decent mk1 is silly and the parts are becomming rare.  I also wouldnt have the gut's to harm a mk1 in this mannor.

Well some stuff you'll need off the top of my head:
Complete GTI front brakes inc calipers and possibly hubs?
Complete GTI engine including ECU and bay wiring loom
Both GTI fuel pumps, under car and in tank inc loom
Complete GTI rear beam, handbrake cables & brake pipes if you want rear discs, the beam will include an ARB + pressure compensating valve
GTI ARB & fittings, you might want to go for an uprated one not essential though
Complete GTI suspension kit
Nothing too serious all bolt on/bolt off jobs :)

Engine wise I'd think about a 2.0 8v or 16v from a MK3, should give you plenty of power for a stripped down MK2 :)

Only problem would be wiring it in, as the 1.3 will have lots of missing loom plus it is pre-CE2 so nothing will plug straight in.  If it was me I'd try to get a mostly complete MK3 and strip the engine and as much loom as possible including the fusebox.  Then I'd get a late MK2 dash cluster loom and dials, along with a late MK2 ignition housing & stalks.  Then it should all just plug in nicely no fuss :)

That was the idea i was going for, although i wasnt sure which engine to go for.  I've already got 256mm 16v brakes inc hubs etc.  The car used to have Ebaich arb's and fk konisports plus loads of other bits and bats from my GTI which i used to own.  I sold the GTI as i was heading off back to college and couldnt afford to insure it hence the 1300 But after a RoadRally i did it kinda killed the golf off.  I sold all the parts and bought a lilttle Nova sr 1300 as i've always been involved with the nova scene.  The trouble with novas is ROT and the image lol.

Anyways Back onto the Golf, How about a KR 1800 16v on webber's?  That would kinda sort the problem of injection out along with fuel lines pumps etc.

Just read on CGTI that Cabs are sh!te in comparison to the injection system... I've Never personally used carbs so I wouldnt know tbh.  Going to have to do some research, I take it the 2.0l 16v from the Ibiza is the same as used in the mk3's etc still being an ABF tall block engine as ibiza's all seem to have a lower milage than the Golfs.

It depends what carbs you are on about, twin carbs if properly set up are no worse than injection in terms of power, in fact you can sometimes get more!  But the disadvantage is they need regular mantenance and can be worse on fuel echonomy, and the drivability can suffer too.  I don't think you would want this setup on a daily driver in the winter for example
