metalic rubing noise
« on: 25 March 2011, 09:31 »
Yesterday had my RA's fitted, all went well, although my exhaust heat shield is lose, any way, driving down the road and it sounds like something is rubbing against somthing when the car is moving, the noise is coming from the rear passenger wheel, bearings are all fine so what could it be? Heat sheild? A trapped stone?

does the noise go in time with the speed of the car?

Well I meant does it speed up in time with the the motion of the car?  What makes you sure the bearings are fine?....  Might be worth checking if you get the same noise when the wheel turns when not laden.  ie: jack up that corner spin the wheel, at the same time make sure nothings catching.  Also try gently applying the handbrake when driving slowly to see if the noise goes away in case it's related to the brakes?

Also, what car is it and what brakes do you have on the rear, drums or discs?

Its got discs front and rear, its a 92 GTi 8v, I would of thought the bearings would of shown signs before the wheel change not straight after a wheel change? Will try the hand brake on my way home tonight, its having a new back box on tomorrow so will check properly then.

Well not common but it's possible.  There is a slim chance that the new wheel isn't balance well and has disturbed the bearing, especially if the bearing is quite old or not been adjusted for a long time... but then I say all this and I haven't heard the noise....  Bearings don't usually make a metallic noise as you describe though, usually a wuring kind of noise.  Metallic makes me think a bare brake pad???

Have you been driving too fast on a gravel road by any chance?
I had a similar noise - a stone stuck in a space between the brake disc and brake shield, it was moving around in there and made a grinding noise when cornering. I fished the blighter out and all was calm again.

I have been using a gravel road of late and the garage I use does have a dirt road to it,I'm guessing its brake related as its more of a grinding noise, will take it in first thing in the morning and see what's what!

had similar on our mk3 polo after putting alloys on, turned out the wheel was a bit deeper than the old steels and it was a wheel weight rubbing on the handbrake cable due to a snapped securing clip. jubileed the cable to the beam and no more rubbage
