I told my old man about this and although he knows I want to do photography he was a bit concerned about 'job security' which i agree with on him if the other guy on lasted 3 days, i cant afford to be out of work got to much debt etc that in my current job although i hate it, it is secure and pays ok

to be fair, you've got this problem with anynew job you take.  All jobs these days are going to have at least a months probation where they can sack you off at anytime.

re the portfolio, yeah you really need something physical, if they are electronic then you're reliant on there being a computer in the interview room and their software supporting your files etc

A bound book will look professional but expensive and imposable to change / update

A nice way I was thinking to do my portfolio for product design when the time comes is in a classic brown leather A3 folio. They are about £100 but pure sex

Beg, borrow or steal an ipad for the interview.

Or ask about their display facilities before you go and take the images along as a pdf file or whatever is best - pdf documents are digestible by virtually anything these days.

Do they have a link to your online presence?  I think you should get them to it before the interview if they haven't.  They'll have far more time to consider your work (if they choose) and it shows you're switched on and 'social'.  These things are important these days, especially in a creative role.

I've had people in firms I've worked at who've only lasted a day in their role (not my reports, FWIW)- it happens, people can 'fluke' or lie and trick the interviewer during an hour, but come up utter rubbish within 8 hours.

An iPad would be an awesome piece of kit to use to display your portfolio, very slick. Although if you don't have someone close that could lend you one, maybe another tablet of some kind so long as it's a decent sized screen.

Although my initial thought was for you to use you MacBook Pro. Still a slick way to present and could show relevance to the type of work your do. Just my thoughts.

Good luck with the interview though, man. I had an interview on Monday and am now through to a trial run tomorrow, looking forward to it but nervous as the type of work I will be doing will be a huge step forward for me from what I do now, along with a huge learning curve. All the best, Joe.

Ahhh cheers guys both very valid points i dont know anyone with an I Pad but I could take my Macbook make a quick folder with some images and just do a slide show good idea and cheaper than rushing around trying to print images off etc etc

Im pretty sure I did send them a link to my flickr account when I first applied, they also know that I dont have any 'offical' photography qualification and that im self taught etc did tell them about my HND in Multimedia etc

When i initally applied and got told that the role was already taken I did ask if I would of gotten the job and tey said based on my Photography yes but they would need to see what my Customer service / sales / phone manner were like etc

Im fairly confident I can do it, its just seeing what its like down there etc etc and see what the pay is like and see if it feel right

If you cannot get an ipad borrow a projector instead.  Hook this up to your laptop and give them a proper presentation.

If their worth their salt they should have one themselves, many meeting rooms now have them as standard.  ASK!

If they dont try your local library to borrow one.

Not sure about the photography industry but suspect it's similar to the design industry interviews in some ways.  I've interviewed for graphic design positions here and I wouldn't have any problems with an interviewee showing up with a CD, stick or laptop to show their skills or portfolio on.  Within design it's nice to see a few items in the flesh to show you have the hands on skills but it's not essential and I'm sure that's the same for photography.

In most cases the portfolio is secondary, it's the whole feel of the person.  I'd employ somebody with a weaker portfolio that will fit in from a personality POV knowing I can shape their skills down the line with time.  Somebody who doesn't fit in is a none starter from the word go.

I'm a bit old school as my portfolio dates back from the late 80s'/early 90s.  A couple of years ago I had an interview, first proper one for about 15 years, turned up with my big A2 Artcare portfolio and got questioned why I hadn't just bough it all on a memory stick.  Turned out they were too corporate for me anyway and the individual who would be my manager who was in the interview I didn't like.  They offered me the job but I turned them down on that basis.  So remember it's as much as an interview for them as it is you.  But then if you don't have a job in the first place.

but as said its also a chance for me to see what thier business is like and what thye are like and just get a feel for what the place is like, see how things are done and well see what the money is like as well!

A smuch as i hate my job at the moment the money is good, but i struggle by on what i earn at the moment, obviosuly some lifestyle changes are needed anyway to help improve this

but if there is a pay cut etc that might be enough to put me off

Fast food in general and well when i go out i dont drink JD as its too bloody pricey but just the whole getting pissed thing waste too much money I think once a month will be more than enough ive said it tiem and time again need to cut it down

well if i can go 10 days before payday with out any money i know i can get buy without spending money its just when i have it i cant help myself
