Alloy wheels won't rust. The marks will be the usual polished alloy white worm infestation which seems to affect all polished sections of VW wheels eventually.

Sorry for the confusion.
The two rear alloys are being replaced under warranty.
Not sure of the cause until I speak to them myself.

As Exonoian says, I don't think it is "rust" but there were definite corrosion marks of some sort.
What is this white worm infestation?  I'm sure the dog had this a few years back?

I have always liked Verve in Wishaw for service.

Did you have to get your dog's bum powder coated after the whiteworm attack?

Anyway have a quick look at this thread, it show's an extreme but typical whiteworm attack. Look particularly around the bolt holes. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,63.0.html
There are masses of threads on this subject on various VW forums. In short, VWs suppliers use a water based lacquer on polished alloy wheels. It doesn't key to the slippery shiny metal very well and becomes porous(sp) over time. Any light marks will allow water to get under the lacquer and you will get a degree of ugly corrosion on the polished alloy face. The first picture in the thread shows what happens if you don't get it sorted quickly!!!
The only permanent cure is to have the faces powdercoated which is only really possible by having the whole wheel in one colour unless you are prepared to pay a sprayer loads of money to mask off sections of the wheel and spray different coats on.
How VWs suppliers originally finish the wheel is that they paint the whole wheel, then turn the area they want to have in a sexy polished finish on a lathe. The whole wheel is then lacquered.
