The Fan doesnt come on on my 1.8 1989 GL, does anyone know much about re-wiring one of these so it'll come on again.

Try shorting out the plug which connects to the fan from the fan switch, of which is screwded into the radiator. You can't miss it it's the only set of wires off of the fan switch. if the fan still doesn't work, then it is the fan, but if it works, then it's a ?7 fan switch from GSF

Start the car up and let it idle until the temp gets higher (does the 1.8GL have an MFA ?), it should come on around 100ish (I think) if it doesn't try checking the fan fuse first.  If that's ok then check the switch at the back of the fan as Lewy says and check that it's getting power to it.
......now officially dubless.

Maybe you could tell us a bit more, is this the interior fan or the radiator fan?

If its the radiator fan, is the engine overheating because the fan isn't coming on when not driving, but just sitting at idle?
