Symptoms of a slipping clutch
« on: 20 March 2011, 11:18 »
Ok i have heard alot of horror stories about slipping clutches on cars with remaps. I have recently purchased a GT TDi PD130 with a jabbasport remap. I now dont know if i am being paranoid.

What does it feel like when you have a slipping clutch? Sometimes in like 3rd gear and i try to accelerate hard it seems to rev a little without it going then it kicks in. The revs dont go up loads, it seems to be ok from standing start. I dont want it to sound like i drive like a loon all the time, the most of the time i am a sensible driver(had it up to 48mpg) lol

Sorry if this is the type of question that makes you all yawn but i did use the search button before posting lol

basically you wont be able to miss it when it happens..
your engine will rev its nuts off but the cars wont really pick up much speed.. gentle acceleration is the only real way of living with it until fixed.

put the car in 5th and see if you can pull away from a stand still, if you can manage it then you have a slipping clutch, if you have to struggle to stop it stalling then your clutch is fine.

Cant do that on a derv as their pants!!! Mine had gone for a while begore it was slipping as the power put down is kinda regulated by the clutch. When i put my new one in, the top end of the rev range was fantastic compared with the previous 9 months

I have noticed that the higher rev range power tails off after about 3500-4000 rpm. Hmm maybe i should book it in and get it checked out.

Is a slipping clutch something that will get worse or if it slips thats it?

Thats normal for a diesel

Yeah will only get worse. How long it will last (assuming it is slipping) depends on your driving style

the g60 flywheel and vr6 clutch wont work on a 6 speed box, if it is slipping then the more you leave it then the more damage its doing to the flywheel, if you catch a slipping clutch early then you can get away just replacing the clutch and saving a lot of money not doin the dual mass.

dual mass is recommended on any diesel engine anyway, lot of vibration without it, its only the pertrols that have no worries..

my dads pd130 passat clutch started slipping at start of last year, still goin strong now, and thats over 20,000 mile since then! its all on your driving style.
