hello newbie needing advice :(
« on: 17 March 2011, 16:14 »
hi all ive joined up for a bit of advice as i have had some really bad news!!
i have a p reg golf and have been told the gearbox is knackered amongst other things.we cannot afford to fix it so now need to get rid asap as its our family car and without it we are well and truly stuck!
but we know little about prices for things, and have had people advising us to sell it as it is for scrap etc......but someone else has advised to just sell bits of it off ourselves.the reason is that is has borbet alloys, vento front end,kw coilovers and heated leather recaros.
so.....what i want advice on is what would you do if it was yours.as we obviously need to get money from this so we can get a new car

if you can cope with having bits of car sat about for a while, strippign it and sellign stuff seperate will get you the most money. the heated seats and doorcards alone should fetch around 400, but it depends on colour and condition. borbets again couple hundred depending on model and condition of them, ebay prob best place to list stuff as most amount of chumps on there who will pay over the odds for stuff ;)

how much money do you need out of the car?  also what engine is it

If it's running Borbets it is most likely to be 4x100 pcd so not a gti/vr6. Braking for parts will most definately get you the most money back. Strip it of what you can and then weigh the rest in as scrap

+1 for the breaking and selling, but as also mentioned, be prepared to have bits sitting around for a little while.

I'm interested in the Vento front end, depending on the colour of course. haha

Why not put it up sale as spares or repairs, should sell ok.

Is it 5 stud then, I guess it must be with being a 2.0

I would break it and sell the parts then call a scrappy to pick up whats left.

You wouldn't get much more than £100 as spares or repair as a whole car I suspect, maybe a bit more due to the parts, unless you find a person who wants all the parts you're selling.

Compare that to probably the best part of £1000 if you were to break it and sell it for parts.
