K04 conversion on gti or buy ed30???
« on: 16 March 2011, 17:37 »
Hi

I need some help to make up my mind.

I have had my golf gti from new and the 4 year lease comes to an end in 3 months. It would have done about 72k miles by then, is in good condition and has a FSH.
It also has an s3 IC, apr hpfp, map and has been colour coded.

Do I buy it from the lease company (I’m guessing they will want about 10.5-11k for it) and k04 it (SH k04 kit from ebay etc for around £1k)

Or do I just buy a used ed30.

The only real advantages of keeping my car I can think of are that I’ve had it from new and I know it’s been looked after.

What shall I do?  :undecided:

I wouldn't have thought it would be worth it. You would spend as much money as swapping for a ed30 by you have it all working then you'll have to insure it and eventually sell it as modified rather than standard car for the ed30.

But I could be wrong on the outlay if you know better.

I'd go for the 2nd option of buying an ED30.

Even if you buy a K04 kit you will not ultimately make the same power as an ED30 or have the same safety headroom in the pistons/rods as an ED30.

The GTI has a higher compression ratio than an ED30 meaning it will not get the same power after a K04 conversion anyway.
Also the rods are known to be weaker in a GTI than in an ED30.

The other option would be to have a full engine swap for a Cupra/ED30/S3 engine. This comes in at around £3k at Statllers.

I guess your right Chris, I would probably end up spending as much and possibly more.  Then there’s selling it at the end.
I was thinking more if it was worth doing because I’v e been the only owner of the car and know what its been through..  I’m starting to think I shouldnt be taking this into account.

Some good points Hurdy, I was going to bid on that K04 conversion kit on ebay but I dont think I’m gonna bother now.

Is it still possible to get hold of a virgin ed30 in good condition or am I just dreaming.... I’m sure I’m wrong but i get the impression that they’ve all been mapped driven properly...

If Hurdy says it's not worth it then it's really not worth it - he's 'mister mod' and knows the ed30 inside out!

Do you already have the S3 injectors and DV kit?

You got a good deal on that one, was so tempted to put a bid down and fit myself as well but bottled it in the last few seconds.
I guess ed30 it is for me now, just hope I can find a nice one.
Actually, have found a nice one but its £16.5k

So will install this get all the other bits and it should cost me around 9k in total,  i am happy with that.
