DIY Polyurethane Engine Mounts
« on: 15 March 2011, 22:00 »
Has anyone on the this forum ever experimented with making diy polyurethane engine mounts. There is a bit of information about it here:-

I'm tempted to maybe give it a go as my mounts are shagged and need replacing anyway. What do you guys reckon?

Hmm casting his own Polyurethane... interesting, but pretty crazy. Got to be pretty careful with the mould and PU grade selection, you also want to make sure you get no air pockets. Plus the isocyanate can cause a pretty severe asthma attack.

Also the shrinkage they talk about is during the casting process.

From the pictures posted it looks like he got new engine mounts and just cast PU around the existing rubber.
If you made a little jig to centralise the bush there would be nothing stopping you cutting out the rubber and doing a full cast.

On saying that, as unlikely as it is to happen i'd like the rubber supports there just incase the PU cracked/came off the rubber or some equally disastarous outcome

i just used masking tape to stop it coming out the bottom then filled the gaps between the rubber

worth it ?

it was for me cos the mount was shagged and it was over 100 quid for a new one! lol

but the mk4 wishbone bushes are worth doing, stops the knacking up in the future
