Have you fitted a gauge and seen what oil pressure you have.

i put a gauge on it today and it was running at about 1 bar (14psi) at 2000 rpm so thats about half what it should be? when i had a look at the drive for the oil pump through the hole that is capped off in the block oil is pouring out of the shaft itself. im starting to wonder if there should be some sort of ball bearing or similar in that cap to restrict the oil flow and that is missing so letting the oil bypass the filter housing back to the sump?

At 2k rpm it should be more like 4 bar. Idle is 1 bar.

Where did you put the gauge, head / oil cooler.

i put it in the top of the oil filter housing? i know it must be low as i can hear the tappets ratteling and what sounds like a main bearing. :undecided:

from the filter housing will give you a higher pressure than at the head, so if its 1bar at filter housing you really do have a problem. pump is dead or the pickup is blocked.  some 16v have a plunger thing in the distributor blank hole, there was a discussion on CGTI which suggested that if this was not extending it could result in low oil pressure iirc?

Hi thanks for the help i have removed that bung where you can see the top of the pump shaft and it is hollow like something should push up into it but there is nouthing there? i had the man from the local garage look at it and he says its must be oil pressure and hes sure its a noise from the crank
i rearly need to get this worked out o else im going to have to find another engine and hope i have better luck with that

Hi just a quick update my lack of oil pressure seems to of been down to the wrong size main bearings. when i rebuilt it i sent the crank away to get it checked and they surpplied the bearings which i then fitted (without checking  :undecided:) so it was my mistake. now i have the wright size bearings im hoping to get it built back up as soon as possible and hope fully it wont rattle
