Rocker cover
« on: 14 March 2005, 09:22 »
Yellloo,

Just realized that the rocker cover on the engine i want to fit (Mk2 8v gti k jet 1.8) is a little different to the one on a standard Mk1 gti engine. I think the throttle cable mounting is different, only thing is i dont have either of the engines at home but i need to decide which one to get re enameled. Does any one have any thoughts???

 Cheers

The rocker covers can be swapped over so get the mk1 cover enameled. Mk1 cover has the bracket for the throttle cable.

Couple of pictures here in this post (I know its a digi, but it may help :undecided:) :-

I assume that although you are planning on using a mk2 engine, you're keeping the injection layout as per original mk1 (as I did with my mk2 engine into my mk1 cabrio). If that is the case, you'll be swapping all the bits over from the original mk1 engine i.e inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, rocker cover, breather etc....

Ah bu**er, wasn't thinking of doing that, just a full on straight swap. The car is completely stripped at the moment then hopefully having this engine fitted. Is there a problem with fitting the injection system from a Mk2 into a Mk1??   Sorry for all the questions but i just wanna make sure that everything is in place, so when i come to re fit everything on the car it goes as quickly and painlessly as possible! Thanks for your help.

Its not just a straight swap over with all the injection system etc. For one thing, the mk2 injection system all goes round to the left (as you look at it) so the inlet manifold, injector pipes, metering unit location........everything is different to the mk1. Exhaust manifold and downpipe are all different. I looked into fitting all the mk2 components, but believe you me, its a lot easier to use the mk1 layout.

Don't let me put you off, it can and has been done. But the quickest and least painful way will be to go down my route. Look in the gallery for some mk2 and mk1 engine layouts and you'll see what I mean about the injection system, manifold etc
