Polishing a freshly painted car?
« on: 14 March 2011, 00:59 »
As title really,my car is having a full respray at the end of the month and I'm wondering about how best to polish it when I get it back.
My plan was to polish the crap out of it and then wax it.
Mainly to make it extra shiney and also to protect it.
It is brilliant black metallic painted in 2 pack if it makes a difference.
Is there a certain amount of time I have to wait before I can polish it?
I can make an angle grinder talk when it comes to steel, but I've not used one for polishing so would ratherdo it by hand.
If anyone can shed some light I'd be very greatfull.

i'd leave it a month or so before breaking out the polishing gear myself especially if its not been in an oven to cure

sure the pro's will come up with better advice

and if you are gonna do it sooner, make sure its bodyshop safe polish (which i think means its ok to use after painting - not sure about this mind)

You will be fine polishing it, but do not add any protection (wax/sealant) for a month or so, these can sometimes stop the paint from hardening completely.

Great stuff,thanks for that.

Is there something you could recommend, polish wise for a frshly painted black car?Ive always used Autoglym but i recently got some Meguiars Tech wax and thought it was pretty good.

Something sub £30?

Thanks very much.

Don't use the Tech wax for a month or so. A polish for a freshly painted car, i'd go with these:

and

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=612&idcategory=75

The paint should be in fairly good condition anyway and may just need a bit of shine added, it shouldn't have any swirls in, and Meg's 205 is a fantastic finishing polish.

Thanks for the order.

Ask any advice you need, i'll also include a few brochures in with your order, the Meg's one has some great advice in.

I'm always more than happy to offer advice or answer any questions I can, if I can't answer them, there are a few other good and very knowledgable lads on here who always offer help too

Just recieved my parcel today.Great service, thanks very much Chris.
The info you sent was very handy too thanks.

I have a couple of questions,on the back of the bottle i recieved it tells me to machine polish,i didnt really want to do this so will i be able to just apply with the sponge you suggested and wipe with some micro fibre cloths?

Also when it comes to washing the car, could you suggest a good shampoo(again for freshly painted black cars) i have Meguiars NXT http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=117&idcategory=3  will this be ok or can you suggest a better one?

Thanks again.
