new backbox
« on: 12 March 2011, 00:37 »
i got my new backbox fitted and it sounds nice and deep but just isnt throaty/raspy/loud enough. it has a nice burble at tickover and when coming down near to idle. when you're not accelerating its quiet which is good, tap the throttle and it sounds good but give it some beans and it doesnt get any louder or throatier.
1. what will happen once it beds in?
2. i'm assuming it has quite a bit of baffles in it, if i got my mid box out do you think i'd achieve the raspy/throaty noise i want?

its quite annoying as you can hear my induction kit more than the backbox!

You'll need to remove the mid box to get any louder tone. Ideally you want a stainless steel cat back system for sound

I've got a scorpion system on mine, two large silencers, decat, and it sounds like this.

Drove to Spain and back last summer and at motorway speeds it's completely bearable

do you think this would increase the volume or should i stop being gay and just get my mid box out?! lol

Same car, different exhaust system (1 small backbox, no mid silencer, cat).

that sounds good, sort of what i want to achieve!

this is the backbox i've got which has their mid sport set up, quiet around town but quite deep which is good but it just doesnt make enough noise! :(
how much difference would going stainless with the pipes as well make?
can i get the box re welded to stainless pipes now its already welded onto the standard pipes?

The box has been welded to the exhaust system?

I'd never buy universal silencers to be honest, never a 100% perfect fit.

You're better off buying a known branded exhaust.

Again, same car blah blah, but this time peco backbox with the rest of the system standard

If you want a more sort of "chavvy" sound, volksbits is what you want

This is on my old Mk2. No cat, small centre silencer and s/s volksbits backbox.

I'd throw the universal backbox away, get a proper cat back system or at the very least a known s/s backbox. You can buy mid silencer replacement pipes off ebay for about £30 I think it is.

problem with buying anything for my car is that no-one lists a 1.8 8v! and i got the universal one because i'm on a budget, i just wanted some cheap noise until my cars finished lol
and tbh the guy that fitted it did a good job :)

all i can find is this and it isnt for my car :(

Pretty sure the bore on the 1.8 is the same as the 2l 8v, so you can search for 2l 8v items.
