Dust repellent recommendations
« on: 08 March 2011, 16:27 »
Basically my car is black and I am getting bored of removing the dust every ten minutes.
I am not after a long term thing just enough that I can drive more than a mile without it looking brown. We used to have an anti-static gun at work which would charge/discharge the surface you fired it at, but these are almost 3 grand!  Does anyone know of any sealants etc which have anti-static properties?

A brother in pain!   I wouldnt be too fussed, but I spent a far too long restoring and painting it too let it look dirty!

most modern sealants are anti-static but unfortunatly when you are buffing anything off the car you are creating static which charges the surface and your cloths, less vigorous buffing will help.

great question... sealants will definitely help... jetseal109 x 2 or even 3 coats topped up with 3 or more coats of wax will help

have you clayed your car pre-sealants?

ideally you want to create as smooth a surface as possible so that dust cannot 'stick' to the surface.

the only way of totally avoiding this is to detail your car in a clean room and then seal it in an air chamber with a filtered air supply

I flatted it back and polished it in the spray booth after it was painted, came in two days later and it was covered in dust. I then used the static gun I was saying about and if you dropped a bit of fluff near it, it would actually push it away from the body.
I know what you mean by dust sticking to a rough surface, but its only been driven for a month since paint and is smooth as hell.
I may try a few different sealants and see if any seem to work better than others.  Also its worse the back of the car, which is probably down to the brick-like shape of the mk2

you will get dust no matter what

i use jetseal and countless coats of dodo juice PH, im on a flat black car and dust is a issue no matter what, one thing i wouldnt do is wipe it off as all you will do is damage your finish.. patience is the key and a good wash method is a must on a black car.

i wash mine every week, the sealants help to a extent but bottom line is, dust is dust and it will land on anything similar to the attraction flies have to sh!t
