Suspension woes

Seriously considering changing my suspension. Does anyone have any feedback on the Koni/Eibach set-up as I'm not going down the 'showcar' route, so I find that coilovers would be wasting money, especially as I don't want to spend ?600 plus on fully adjustable suspension, so I thought the Koni/Eibach would be a good comprimise.

Oh just incase your wondering, no I don't intend on fitting fatter rims or rims with a wicked offset, and a 40mm drop would be sufficient.

Also has anyone ever come across any problems when fitting a new set-up to an old Golf, i.e, new top mounts and that kind of good stuff?

Eibachs springs are ok, and give a nice visual look. they have a nice firmness on cornering. nice but not savage. The only problem is that even new VAG dampers (cant remember if Boge or Bilstein) are not firm enough to stop the rear suspension grounding out on the exhaust.

Which leaves two options.

1) Change rear dampers.
2) Never carry anything in the boot, and have anyone on the back seat.

I'm going 2).

i never had an exhaust problems on mine when running the Eibach setup, and that had a full S/S Mongoose on it also

Eibach springs are a quality spring but they dont really lower enough for my liking. id have preffered a 40mm drop but they only do 25mm on 16v's

and fitting a new setup to an old car will transform the car it will feel so much sharper handling wise

FOR ?192 FOR AWESOME GTI YOU GET BILSTEIN SHOCKS AND 40MM SPING ALL ROUND!
GSF DO A KIT WITH 40MM DROP AND BOGE FOR ABOUT ?180 ALL IN.
I'VE GOT THE AWESOME KIT ON MY VALVER AND ITS GOOD RIDE.

Cheers tinman, but I'm going to change the lot, not just the fronts, and as for the exhaust if the rear axle is touching the pipe, then there is something surely wrong elsewhere, I've lowered many a car (not just VAG's) and never come across a problem like that.

Dannyd I've got a GSF setup on the wife's polo, and I'm going in for a new spine soon  :wink:

HI, 3 WEEKS AGO I FITTED THE BILSTEIN STREETLINE KIT, SUPPLIED BY AWESOME GTI (?190) THE CAR IS SO MUCH BETTER. IT IS STIFFER  AND  BANGS ABOUT OVER SOME REALLY BADLY CUT UP ROADS, BUT IS NOT TOO SEVERE.

AT THE SAME TIME I REPLACED FRONT LOWER WISHBONES AND DISKS PADS AND WHEEL BEARINGS ALL AROUND. THE ONLY OTHER PARTS I NEEDED WERE NEW TOP MOUNTS FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION, THEY HAD ROTTED AWAY TO ALMOST NOTHING

i don't think you can go too far wrong with the koni eibach set up. its tried and tested. but when you do it definately change the top mounts. you can go for mk3 ones as well, not sure if thats the gti ones or not but they are more heavy duty than the mk2 ones.

I'm planning on fitting lower top mounts anyway - the Bonrath ones, as the Eibach springs only bring it down 20mm, and with the top mounts it should be more like 35-40mm (fingers crossed)!

^^ heard some dodgy things about those lowered spring cups (you'll still need new top mounts, the cups are something different) but alot of people use them so they can't be all bad.
