right.  Steering fixed.  And now the dash clock (etc) has reset and the airbag light is on.  Need to scan it for the airbag code.  I wouldn't have thought that Id pulled the column enough to upset the electrical connectors?

dash appears to work now, bar scraping noise from behind steering wheel.

edit -> VCDS shows code as:

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
        32-00 - Resistance too High


VW have it on Friday to do alignment/tracking stuff - so they can sort it then....  Don't like playing with airbags.  I like the warning in RossTech...

When "Short to positive" or "Short to ground" is found, DO NOT CLEAR THE DTC. This can cause the airbag to deploy. See repair manual for more information.
