Brake sizes - How big can I go??
« on: 10 March 2005, 23:50 »
Hello.

Does anyone know the biggest diameter brake discs you can put on a 1.8 20v Normally Asp. Golf GTI without altering/changing the calipers? (front and rear)

How big can I go??

Cheers,
Rich? ?

i doubt you can go any bigger with the standard calipers and carriers because if you go bigger the disc will be thicker and there will not be enough clearance were the disc goes between the carrier and the pad sit if that helps.

Thats odd.  In my small amount of research, I haven't noticed that bigger diameter discs are thicker.

I was more worried about the calipers not allowing enough room for the larger diameter.

My car comes as standard with 280mm diameter discs on the front.  I think 1.8T's have 288mm on the front - are the calipers different?

think the calipers are the same but the carriers are different, you might be able to modify yours. to go any bigger than that though you need to swap calipers, might want to look into 1.8T anniversary or audi tt brakes if you find some on ebay.. failing that you -may- be able to squeeze brembos of the seat LCR under your avus rims. would look very tasty

Cheers Toph.  I'll look into it.

P.S.  They ain't avus alloys, mate, but Audi TT 17"ers.

Really?? I stand corrected.

My car came with avus I 15" 5 spoke VW wheels, and I know some of the 2.0 GTIs come with avus II 15" ones (with the split down the middle of the spoke).? Thought Avus was just the style (like 'Montreal' that the 1.8Ts come with), rather than the brand.? Show's what I know!?

Topher, you decided to keep your GTI, and scrap the scooby idea?
