Not a good time to be selling a mk3!
« on: 03 March 2011, 22:15 »
They are ridiculously cheap at the minute. Been watching quite a few on ebay and they are literally selling for £200 - 300 for a good un. Most dont even meet the reserve. Surely the prices are gonna start climbing after this slump? Maybe petrol prices are to blame?

I think if you find a real good one you would be a fool not to buy it, beacause they will get rare and will go up in money. thats why I got my high spec gti. hoping one day it will be worth something

They are reaching an age where they are only worth anything to people who are interested and prepared to work on them as they are all getting a bit tired I think, for that reason I suspect everyone who isn't interested has decided to sell up and get a more modern, and in their opinion hopefully more reliable car, thereby swamping the 2nd market with hundreds of perfectly good cars.
The newest mk3 will be 13 years old now which is very old to a lot of people. Seeing anything pre the 'new' reg layout '**02 ***' is getting less and less common as people generally want newer cars I think and are flogging the old off at next to nothing or scrap value.

cost of fuel goes up
cost of mk3 diesels goes up
cost of mk3 gti's and vr's drops like a rock

I pretty much had to give away my tidy r-reg valver and have just paid a lot more for a half tidy bog standard tdi on a p-reg.

So it is a good time to be selling if you have an oil burner, not good if you have a pocket rocket.

one reason mk3 values have fallen is due to mk4 values falling (I have seen several mk4 gti's under £1000 recently..and they were selling for double that a year ago!)

and can I add I have looked at a few mk3 gti's in the last month (ebay and autotrader) and I don't think any were worth buying!! (I even upped my price range and they all still had some issues! 1 actually had 12 months mot and rotten sills!)

I dont think they have dropped to much tbh they have always been cheap a standard mk3 gti has always been between £500 to £1000 really for a while now ,VRs seem to still hold the money not to bad even with the rising fuel prices people still buy them but with VRs now you can get them on classic car insurance so that helps.Any car now without a MOT really isnt worth much just scarp value unless its a newer model car.I also think to really stand getting reasonable money the car needs to have some extras like coilovers, alloys and anything else will always help the sale.I recently put mine on pistonheads just to see if I would get any intrest I put it up at £1695 being cheeky which is pretty strong for a 8v and that same day I had 2 people intrested in the car but I bottled it then an took it off

I agree with the OP, even see the odd V5 go for under £1k.

Even so, two weeks ago i bagged myself a VR6 for £750, 9 months test & 3 months tax. Thought it was quite the bargain!
