Am I being ripped off?
« on: 03 March 2011, 20:06 »
Right I have never paid a garage to do any work to any of my cars before but at the moment I seriously lack any time to do the work myself.

Basically my new car (mk3 2.0 8v) had its MOT and failed it today on these things (all of which I changed myself on my previous mk3):

- 3 brake lines corroded (both the rears and one of the rear flexi joints)
- front wishbone excessive play (nearside)
- CV boot (nearside)

The full cost I have been quoted for the job is £220 including VAT etc.
Now a wishbone is £40, CV boot £12 and brake pipes probably between £20 and £40 to get sorted out, I estimate it would take me at least 4 hours to do the complete job myself assuming everything went ok (In my experience this seldom happens and something unexpected always happens). Call it £80 parts or so, that's £140 labour. Does that sound about reasonable? He quoted £120 to do the brake lines, £100 for the wishbone, CV boot and a couple of bulbs.

The car is a pretty mint GTI in Pearl Grey, has 100,000 miles on the clock but has been sat for a year, it seems pretty standard bar factory tinted windows (didn't know these existed).
I think I am taking a bit of a gamble shelling out £255 (including mot) on a car I haven't driven much (only to MOT station). It puts my total cost of this car up to £750. It better not break down/blow up/catch fire or get nicked anytime soon!

This is the car (on an axle stand at the back hence the reason it looks like its flying!):

That's very cheap to be honest.
I would expect to pay much more.
