Golf GTI based kit cars?

i'm idly thinking of a project.. hehe..
have there ever been any kit cars available based around GTI ancillaries?
and if so.. are any these still going?
i'm thinking small/light 2 seater racer type effort.. similar to the "locost" principle..

a lot of kit cars you can swop and choose, most are escort based purely because they are a cheap item to get hold of and the positioning of the engine.

being a kit car - you can just make the engine and suspension subframes etc etc all to your own spec - especially if you mean the locust/locost style 2 seaters - jus need to know how to weld!
