Golf gti mk5 ed30 ongoing correction
« on: 02 March 2011, 14:08 »
Hey guys,

Well I have yet again had someone reverse into my wing, so after paint and curing time it is now once again time to re-correct the golf, only managed one side in about 6 hours :( wool pads next time.

The wing was my main concern, however, when I went around the car I noticed a lot of marring and general scratches, some I inflicted and some were done through various companies having my car and cleaning it :(

Anyway, lets me use my detailing stuff !

So I got started

All polish used was worked via a metabo and finishing glaze via my porter cable.

  • Foamed with chemical guys no touch @ 60degs
  • Dwell and jetwash off @ 60 degs
  • Two bucket method with two grit guards, simoniz wash and wax soap :doublesho and two mitts
  • Dry using chemical guys towels (can't remember the name)
  • De-tar using autosmart tardis
  • Clay the car using meguiars fine clay
  • Foamed the car using super snow foam @ 60 degs
  • Rinsed the car @ 60 deg
  • Dried again
  • Polishing pads used, Meguiars Maroon Cutting Pad, Lake Country Cutting Pad, Hex Logic Cutting pad, Meguiars Polishing and Finishing pads, 3m finishing pads, Hex-logic finishing pads, lake country flat pad glaze
  • Abrasive polish ; 3m fast cut plus
  • Medium polish ;  3m Extra fine compound
  • Finishing polish ; 3m Ultrafina, Poorboys ssr1, swissvax paint cleaner
  • Sealant ; Blacklight
  • Wax ; Zymol Glasur

The re-sprayed panels were very hard although quite easy to mar which was a bugger, hence the various finishing polishes and pads.

I found ssr1 to work the best in this area because it didn't dust as much and therefore left less chance of marring. I must say swissvax stuff is excellent I will use this once the whole car is done.

Ok here as the befores.

Most important part for me with a black car is making sure it is nearly clean before I even lay a mitt on the paint work

This stuff works for sure!

General condition of paintwork

Why it's always a good idea to clay your windows!!!!

Lesson learnt, don't drag feet coming out of car :(

Somebody hit my car with there door

Home-made sun gun - normal cheap bulb

Afters

Can you say perfection ?

Still some refining to do but it took me about four different pads and 3 polishes to get this far !!

Still had some remains of ssr1 but was so happy to finally to have finished this panel, it took ages.

So things still to do are, boot and bumper correction, roof and the passenger side of the vehicle as well as alloys, exhaust and possibly look at alloy re-furb.

:car:

Update 1

So today I wanted to try a slightly new take on washing my car, and on top of that get some chemical guys V? on. Then de-tar the alloys and perform a deep cleanse then put some protection on.

Onto the pics.

Had the car up on a jack and a stand too, can't be too careful !

Just old skool bits of wood to keep the alloy off the ground. Note - I don't use a pressure washer to wash the wheels when they are off, I have small stone chips just incase any flick up.

I use meguiars wheel brightener to wash the wheels today as I wanted them as clean as possible. They don't and have never been off the car.

Due to careful cleaning and semi-regular I was quite suprised I wasn't faced with more dirt, just shows if you get in the back then it makes it so much easier.

One of the things I couldn't get away with was the amount of tar on the wheels, I mean look at this ! It is about 5mm round. There was a few of them. I picked off the bigger bits, no point leaving the tar remover to eat the whole bit when I can remove some of it.

The above picture was taken after TWO tardis hits and one autoglym tar remover. I am going out on a limb here to say I like autoglym tar remover better because tardis is just a bit raw smelling and really is nasty stuff.

I then forgot to take pics :( I wiped all the residue and managed to get them 100% which I was really happy with. I washed them with shampoo plus to remove any tar stuff then sealed them with fk1000p.

Buffed it off, gave a nice glossy finish not that it really matters on the alloys tbh. I popped the wheel back on the vehicle and dressed the tyre.

The main benefit of removing the wheels is getting a good look in the arches and see how bad my springs are, they really have taken a beating and also my tyre is very low so I will get that changed on Monday I think.

Still to dress the tyre here, it's coming off tomorrow anyway but I dressed it still. OCD - check
