2e 8v dumping coolant when switching off ignition
« on: 01 March 2011, 16:22 »
this is getting me screwin now, doesnt overheat but if left to idle it will dump the coolant through the expansion bottle overflow when switched off, have noticed that the afterrun fan doesnt come on either, but fan kicks in when running at the right times,

Could this be an air lock? also the temp guage doesnt go above 70 ish (normal driving) but will hit 90 when stationary, could this be a duff thermostat - could this relate to the coolant dumpage?

could be dodgy thermostat mate when the car is at normal running temp check your rad is hot at the top and bottom if not replace the thermostat and try again,if it is warm all the way through go to a local garage and get the to do a sniff test which will see if there is carbon monoxide in your expansion tank post how you get on

Air lock or too much pressure in the cooling system (head gasket maybe)

whats the best way to be sure i have cleared an air lock?

Iv had a new matrix and i thought it was already filled, is it worth disconnecting the hoses to the matrix and prefilling it then reconnecting?

also realised i have a small leak at the top of the rad, i suspose this could be letting the water expand and then overflow?
what are your views?

change the tank cap before you get too involved with changing parts, or at least take the cap off and check the seal is seated properly.  a small leak a shouldnt make it overflow, it'll just leak a bit. had a leaky rad for a month and it never blew out the header tank

Cheers matey,

I looked at this cap yesterday and found the O ring was pinched in the threads, fitted a new oring this morning and ran it up, it didnt spit any water out and got up to fan temp before i switched it off. so think it may be sorted. will still sort the leak out though,
