16v mkI conversion
« on: 03 September 2003, 18:23 »
ok, i need some help, i've just bought a mk1 golf 1.1, it's mint but i intend to go fast! i am looking at dropping in a 1.8 16v GTI engine from a mk2 GTI, however i will be ditching the injection system for weber DCOE45's. can someone please tell me, will the engine, box and driveshafts just fit straight in or will i have to fabricate some different mounts to fit it? also i will need to use the old coil and distributor ignition set up, will the standard 8v GTI distributor fit on the 16v block? and finnally, where can i get an inlet mainifold for my carbs? i am a competant machanic so any wiring will be easy as will any fitting. thanks. simon.

The 8v distributor will not fit on the 16v block cos they are different distributors and the blocks are different. Not sure about the rest , anyone  ???

Doing a similar swop in my mk1,(2000 16v)but keeping the 2000 motronic injection. ::)
Use the 16v dist and associated knock box and coil. Have heard of people fitting 1100 polo distributors, have not tried this.
Engine and box will go in, will have to use linkage, g/box mounts, clutch and speedo cables of a "020" g/box mk1, use mk1 gti drive shafts(may have to swop inner cv joints or flanges, (90mm=gti, 100mm=16v, not always the case).
Should be easy to get a manifold. Search on the net.
Ps. A mk1 gti would make the swop a lot easier. Hope this helps and good luck, Steve.

As your donor chassis is an 1100, the cambelt end engine mount will be in a different location. If I remember correctly, having done it myself, you will need to weld an engine mount in further forward. Its not a problem..........just something you need to be wary of.
The 1.1 and 1.3 engines are mounted totally differently to the 1.5 engine upwards due to this engine mount.
