Glossy plastic trim
« on: 27 February 2011, 14:48 »
I've asked about this on here before but that was whether i could use what i have to protect it, anyway, the Glossy trim on my B pillars have quite bad swirl marks in them which are very visible in the sun, i use AG srp on the body to good effect but it just won't touch this trim! any advive on products to try? it's all done by hand btw.

Thanks

Yeah, they're a pain in the ass! I got a new one fitted two weeks ago and it's already got marks on it.

Advice on this is appreciated too.

if your hand polishing then you'll need a medium to fine cutting compound(something with a little bit of bite) and rub the area using small circular motions with a little bit of pressure working your way up and down the trim over lapping where you have been, work the polish for a minute or 2 then lighlty buff off, repeat if needed then onto a finishing compound or you should be able to go to a glaze then seal and wax.

shame your not doing it with a machine as it will take no time to get it sorted and the results will be far better but you can still acheive good results by hand.

hope this helps guys

Cheers bud, i will eventually get a machine and then you'll all be bombarded with questions about pads and stuff! i think for the time being i'll just leave it and just keep on using what i have been. nice one

no probs, unfortunatly these plastic trims etc can scratch up easier than paint does.

Just a little update to this, had some decent weather today so thought i'd have a go at these, i got some 3m masking tape and masked up all the rubber round the trim first, i started by doing 5 coats of AG SRP buffing off between passes, this seemed to work quite well and filled a lot of the scratches, i then put 2 coats of CG EZ Creme glaze on which i was suprised at how much difference this made as i haven't even used it on my paint yet! Very impressive. I then put 2 coats of CG Jetseal 109 on top and the result is much better, i used a different tri-foam applicator for each product, overall i'm very pleased with it.
The only issue i had really was the edges of the tape started to disintigrate after the AG and the bits kept getting in the way. I did try and take a before photo but i couldn't get the swirls to show sorry.

Cheers for the advice guys

you dont need to use tape when you are polishing by hand its only needed when machine polishing where its more likely you hit the rubbers etc with the pad.

yes ez creme glaze is a fantastic product, on paint its very good if the prep before hand is spot on, really deepens the gloss and gives it depth.

sounds like you got some good results any mate:)

Yeah i wouldn't normally bother with tape when doing the paintwork but these trim pieces are surrounded by rubber seals, i tried to polish them before but kept touching the seals so couldn't get any real consistancy or pressure, i'm looking forward to using the glaze on the paint but i think i'll leave it a while as i only clayed, polished, sealed and waxed it a few weeks ago so should be ok for a couple of months.
