How much is a Mk2 worth Breaking?
« on: 07 March 2005, 23:50 »
Just had an accident in my oak green 16v big bumper model. Some people like to pull out in front of you!The car is pretty mint but has suffered front end damage mainly to the nsf. The grill, bonnet, bumperboth wings are damaged. The car has done 113,500 with a strong engine and box. n the last 10 months I have spent in Excess Of ?1500 in parts and labour with ?1100 in parts receicpts mainly from Vag or Euro car parts. It has a new Fuel accumulator and the 2 pipes,fr discs and pads,2 new calipers, downpipe, sump and gasket, rocker gasket, gear linkage completly renewed,fr shocks and wishbones+anti-roll bar links, wheel bearing,Timing belt 2k ago with alt belt and ps belt and puley, THE LIST GOES ON! The only bad points were that the drivers seat was worn and the diveshaft end oil seals were leaking which is a common thing on these cars. In fact I have got them in the garage but i've had no time to put them on as it is a difficult job.Anybody interested in any parts?

Is it actually a write-off??? Has it been deemed an unsafe vehicle or just an uneconomical repair???
Damage often looks a lot worse than it is so I would be reluctant to condemn the whole car too quickly. As long as the shell from the bottom of the windscreen backwards isn't damaged it's amazing what can be done. Yeah you could probably get a fair amount if breaking the car, it's amazing what people will pay for silly little bits and pieces on ebay. However you would have the hassle of finding a buyer for all the bits and then still have the hassle of disposing of the shell. If the rest of the car is as good as it sounds I would advertise it as a whole and hopefullysomebody will resurrect it.
I had an accident in my first valver 10years ago, I was third party and assumed it would be a write-off so sold it for peanuts, I saw it about 5years ago driving about still going strong!!!
A friend and I recently broke a 16v mk2 which we had bought for spares once we ripped off the damaged front panel (bonnet, wing, front valance etc) there wasn't actually that much damage to the car and it would have been an easy repair. Unfortuntely that wasn't why we had bought it so we had to proceed with ripping it apart.
Sorry to waffle.......somebody save this golf........it's oak green!!!!!

sounds repairable to me  did you know you can remove and replace the inner wings as well? so as long as nothings bent you can replace the front end.

Yeah that's what I meant, as long as the shell isn't distorted behind the bottom of the windscreen then it's amazing the sort of heavy damage that can be put right. I guess if the A pillars, roof or sills are damaged then it's history.
My last oak green valver ended up in that sorry state, had a smack at over 70mph (unsure of exact speed), the front end, bonnet and osf wing were totalled. It didn't look too bad until I noticed the doors didn't meet the windscreen anymore, the roof and both sills were creased aswell.
