Noise coming from OSF wheel area
« on: 23 February 2011, 11:31 »
Hi guys,

This proplem started in the last couple of days and has progressivley got worse.

Whem im driving at say 10mph its more prominant than when driving at 50mph, and is also more noticable when coasting or braking as opposed to accelerating.

Its a kind or rubber/grinding noise and squeek coming from the wheel area. Ive briefly checked that the CV boot is in tact and not leaking and i cant find anything there, could this be something to do with the actual CV joint itself or even the driveshaft. Also when i turn the steering wheel slightly the noise will go.

Any help on this will be great as i will have a proper look on weekend but if i got an idea what it could be then could make the job easier.

Thanks in advance.

could be a wheel bearing, but sounds like your brake pads are shagged.

Does the noise get louder or quieter depending on if your turning?

As harlemex suggested I would check the wheel bearing for play first, also have a look at your brake pads. My mum was complaining of a metallic grinding noise on her Ford Ka, I checked the brakes and the pads were completely shot hence the grinding noise.

Is your car lowered or do you have non-standard wheels? The rubbery sound could be the tyre scrubbing, take the wheel off and check the tyre over for any obvious points of contact with the car.

The sounds seems to go when i turn left of right its when the wheel is in the centre it makes the noise, more so when coasting or braking not so much when accelerating.

I checked the brake pads yesterday and they are fine, i lowered the car last week only about 80mm and i cant see that there is any clearance issues.

Just thought the rubber noise was CV boot but looked and all seemed fine.

If its a wheel bearing then ill have to take to the garage to do as i dont have a press but anything else then i can do, just need to find the best way of diagnosing the problem

Thanks guys

What size/offset wheels are you running?
