My mate is looking for a new car and as he is completely useless at it im giving him a hand. He wants something nippy and ideally DERV (i think this is an awefull idea but then again I dont live 3.5 hours from uni/my lady so turbos and petrol is a good combo for me) anyhow im obv trying to persuade him to go vag and the obvious choice seems to be the DPF 2.0 TDI 170's because its the most powerfull. Any problems with this car/engine?

I think the DPF can cause problems if the the engine is remapped but it can also be removed and mapped to work fine without the DPF. Otherwise I haven't heard of any serious problems. As for general problems, make sure there isn't any battery drain if an aftermarket headunit is fitted. I can't think of other issues that pop up on non-GTIs.

Hi,

Ask him to try a BMW 320 or 330d. I swapped my Mk5 GTi for a E90 330d M sport and it's never missed a beat. Re-mapped, it has tremendous performance (a single re-mapp will get you around the 300bhp mark) and the economy is exceptional; in fact, i find it difficult to drop below 36mpg around town. I've seen in excess of 54mpg on long motorway journeys. It will keep with anything the best of hatchbacks can throw at it around the twisties and the chassis is full of character.
