Hi guys,
Just recently got a mk3 gti in europa blue mica (LZ5T), and was wandering if you have any suggestions on a good wax to use for this paint work. Am I right in thinking that with pearl and metallic paint you have to be careful with waxes/polishes?

I'm looking for a fairly quick and easy system and my budget would be about 30 quid. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

In my opinion I would stay away from wax's and head for the polish.  Your car has a clear coat over the base coat which was designed so that the sun would not fade your paint as quick however back in the old days and in old skool shops like the one I was working in the paints are single stage.  Single stage paints provide all the shine but not very much protection from the sun so they would wax the crap out of em. Long story short the wax is an over kill and will end up leaving alot of buildup on your car.  A good polish, not a wax, and some hard work will make your car pretty again! :nerd:

clearcoates can fail and do fail even on new/newer cars, the modern sealants and carnauba waxes are perfect for protecting both finish types, they add uv protection and protect from contaminants like salt, bird poo, tree sap,air polution, etc etc.

not understanding why you think wax is an over kill  and leaves alot of buildup of what?

Hmmm... Clear coat is a ceramic coating which in theory, should't need any further treatment... However, as correctly suggested by Purple Haze, it does degrade over time and sealants and waxes protect the paint, and also magnify the gloss brought about by polishing. Please correct me if im wrong  but i would ALWAYS suggest to protect the paint with a sealant or wax.

If you dont want to apply and wait half an hour for it to cure, you could always use one of these "apply and walk off" products like GTeqniq C2 or Opti-seal which will use nano-technology to bond with the paint. I recently got some GTechniq C2 which i applied to my bonnet today, so i'm interested to see the level of protection/beading i get from it when it rains (which will inevitably be when i get it out of the garage tomorrow morning!)

Ceramic coating? Never heard that before, i just thought clearcoat was like paint but without any colour? I know new Mercs have a ceramic element in the paint.
