Bottom End?
« on: 01 September 2003, 22:39 »
Hey evryone I'm new to this forum. I have a '91 16v totally standard engine-wise. It runs ok (seems alot slower than my prev 8v!). No matter what revs gear or speed im at, whenever I floor it I notice a clanking (sort-of ticking) noise! Then, as i ease off the acc, the noise gets quieter. Im never satisfied driving it hard, as this noise is worrying. I think it might be the main bearings, and/or crankshaft, but if so, why only under heavy acceleration? Any ideas? coz i cant afford a rebuild!  :-\

Exhaust advice pleeez. The system I like is a full Scorpion with Boxer (square-ish oval) back box, mostly because the shape fits nicely
into the bumper cut-out shape. I keep hearing rumours that Scorpion are CRAP for Mk2's! I was considering a dual-exit custom
Powerflow system, but I also heard that custom exhausts from Powerflow are a waste of money! I quite like the Magnex oval, and i've
been recomended by more than one to go 4 sebring - I only want the best quality.  ;D

I think I'm gonna go straight 4a K&N airfilter, unless someone objects with a proven better airfilter...

Welcome to the forum.
You might be lucky, that noise you're hearing under acceleration could be 'pinking'. I think the ignition system on the 16V is fully electronic, however, there is a procedure in the Haynes manual for checking the ignition timing. Out of curiosity, what grade fuel are you using?

I've had no problems with my Powerflow exhaust that I had fitted to my Audi 2 years ago. The whole system was cheaper than replacing just the 2 rear boxes (oem) and its guaranteed for life.

If it is a ticking noise, its more likely to be a worn cylinder head than a worn bottom end. I agree the timing could be out as the 16v will never be slower than the 8v  ;) Whats it like starting from cold, are the tappets noisy? Try checking the static timing, as this could be out if the belt is worn.

When I said my new 16v seems slower, it's because I hadnt got used to the new power curve. It's just that when i make more use of the 16v's upper range, I hear that noise and get a feeling like a piston's gonna shoot through my bonnet!

From cold I suffer from ISV sindrome, which I plan to sort DIY. Anyway, the tappets can be heard when cold then go quickly which is good, This 155k engine is otherwise schweet. I only use optimax.

I read a HOW-TO in the Golf about cam timing, where there is slight difference between each camshaft, and the exh valves dont fully open in time. Do you think this will help my timing prob?

The only way you can check if the two cams are dead level is to take off the cam cover. Does the noise happen when you rev the car in neutral with the clutch down? could be gearbox related. If you think the problem is the engine then maybe try a compression test, this will not necessarily tell you if the bearings are worn but will give you a clue to the state of the engine compression wise. If the bearing are shot then you will probably get very loud knocking noises rather than ticking noises.
