Golf GT TDi 110 Blown Turbo?

Hi,

I have a 2000 Golf MK4 GT TDi which at the weekend appeared to blow the turbo. As I pulled up the slip road onto the motorway, there was a bang, lots of black/brown smoke out of the exhaust, a very loud turbo whistle, no (turbo) power, and a noise similar to a blowing exhaust. As I limped down the motorway, if I tried to accelerate, there would be more black smoke and juddering whilst it tried to apply a bit of power. When I pulled over, the idle was not stable and oil was leaking onto the floor below the driver side headlight.

The car turns over and starts ok, but with the same blowing and whistling noise coming from behind/below (ish) the driver side headlight, not that I know what I'm looking for!

I was recovered by the RAC and left the car at the garage, who have said the turbo has blown and it will be about £1000-1150 to supply and fit a new turbo, providing it hasn't done any further damage. One other garage has quoted £850 which seems too cheap.

After reading a few other posts, it seems like it might not be the turbo that has gone, as this would have caused maybe white or blue smoke?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Sounds like you've blown a pipe off the intercooler.

The intercooler is located in the drivers wheel arch below the headlight.  Pop off the front grill for a look but chances are its full of oil, hence why you noticed it dripping

That's your best case scenario.

Worst case is the turbo has gone.  A brand new replacement unit can be had for around £400 then you have to add labour for fitting

My thoughts too........check the pipe hasn't blown off the intercooler as it sounds very much like that rather than the turbo.....especially with the location of the blowing/whistling noise. 

It happened to my mate's 130 and it really did chuck up a lot of black smoke and lost all power. Much cheaper fix than a new turbo/exhaust manifold......on the 110 it is all one lump!

Popping off the RH inner wheel arch liner will expose it nicely for you

i have same engine, mine done similar thing last year, the hose popped off at the top of the intercooler behind the driver headlight, the plastic pipe it connects to got jammed in the aux belt!! cost my 5 quid to fix (breakers!). however when the hose come off the car idled fine and lot of black smoke under load, it must be the pipe, i took my wheel, bumper and headlight off for repairs.
