lost keys
« on: 01 September 2003, 11:39 »
hi,

a friend with a mk3 gti has just lost her only set of keys.

does anyone know if you can get new keys without changing the locks? (i.e. are the key numbers noted by the dealer or in the car documents etc?)

many thanks,
dave

Theres a set of letters on the key, she wrote them down right??  Failing that I reckon shes had it because theres a chip for the immobiliser in the key from cars after late 1994 and i havent got a clue how they can copy that without the original.   I'd be interested to know what happens here

You could try taking the door lock off and trying to get a locksmith to make a key up to it, some of the more talented ones can do it but its a pain in the arse.

Other than that try asking VW, not sure if its noted but worth a try.

Thats the good thing about hondas and mazdas, you can get a key cut by just removing the door lock and quoting the 4 digit number, sh!t hot if you wanna nick one and have screwdrivered the lock out.
