Ignition switch problem?
« on: 12 February 2011, 08:58 »
Hi, Just got my 16v back from the garage after they set the timing which was well out and it was also running lean so the co has been set to 2%. But since the visit the car wont start for ages in the mornings? Yesterday it took so long the battery nearly died before it finally fired! But what i have noticed is when my key is turned all the way and the car is trying to fire it's only when the key is turned back that it nearly starts, The same happened today ie.. it took me 10 seconds with the key fully turned, gave up and tried again but this time i turned the key full and back ever so slightly and it fired up! Does this sound like it could be the ignition switch?
Also when the car is hot it does fire up much easier but every now and then its a little tricky and it used to fire straight up!

Cheers Carl.

I had this years ago on my 1st MK2 , the ignition switch on the back of the lock barrel is made of plastic and over the years of key turning the slot gets worn and bigger , thus the switch is not making a good contact when the key is turned ! remove the steering cowling and find the white plastic switch with about 6 wires going to it ,on the back of the lock barrel ! Get yourself a new one and hey presto ....no more probs ! From memory they are about £8.00 ish ! Hope this helps dude ?

Yes it sounds like this could be the problem! There doesn't feel to much play in it but must be enough to not get a good contact. Thanks for your help

Carl.
