Hi - I have an immaculate Mk 2 GTi with 230000 miles on the clock (for those of you with back issues of mags, it was featured in the March 1996 issue of the then VW Driver magazine, as 'Teacher's Pet' (I was a teacher at the time). Then it had done 110000 miles - now it has done 230000, and it has still only broken down once in its entire life (last summer when the fuel pump gave out!). It still has 3 out of 4 original wheel bearings and all original CVJs - and the engine doesn't smoke or rattle. Anyway, I am preaching to the converted - the purpose of the message is that today I lost one of the centre caps from one of the 'P' style Pirelli alloys that were fitted to early Mk 2 GTis. I am really sick about it - it was because I had been changing wheel;s around and had to rush out, and I hadn't pressed it on hard enough. So... if anyone knows where there is one or can sell me one, I shall be eternally grateful. They are the kind WITHOUT 'Pirelli' on (that was late model Mk 1s). The car is now French registered because I have a house in France and I keep it there, although it is back in England for a service at the moment. Cheers, and thanks in advance - Alan

Thanks anyway - it is good to see they come up occasionally, anyway! It is depressing to see they are rare and expensive, but somehow I was guessing that after having phoned all the VW breakers I knew and heard lots of sucking of teeth! I shall keep up the search, and keep an eye on eBay, and if anyone does hear of a single one or a set I will be very grateful.

Thanks again - Alan

Ah! I just had another look on eBay, and I have found a set of caps and 2 sets of wheels, all cheap!! Thanks very much for the advice - it looks like the panic is over! The original problem was that I couldn't find them on eBay because I didn't know where to look, but going to VW parts -> Pirelli brings up quite a few, and they don't seem to be that expensive (presumably because most people like to put fancy alloys on their cars, whereas I like to keep mine original). I really like the way they make the car look, even though 14 inches is tiny nowadays, and I also like the fact that my car is so early that it doesn't even have the red stripes on the bumpers - it makes it a real Q-car, because it can still see off virtually anything on the road (I have never been beaten away from a French motorway toll booth!). Thanks again and cheers - Alan

I would love to (it still looks great after all these years!) but I haven't worked out how to post pictures! Anyone let me know how? When I click on 'insert image' above I just get [img] in square brackets. Should I type in a URL (what I really wanted to do was let it browse my image folder to find it!).

Thanks in advance - Alan
