You should be concerned, it means there is a fault somewhere in the system.  The airbag is very, very unlikely to just go off randomly, but it's also very, very unlikely to go off at all, i.e when you need it.

You need a diagnostic check.  Could be as simple as a fuse.

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.

my old '96 polo did this.. vw wanted 600 odd quid to cure it? :embarassed:

i have a feeling mine was caused by me (while i was still learning!) having to do an emergency brake/steer around maneuver due to a young deer that had jumped into the road i was on. my dad nearly had a heart attack. but trusted my driving after I handled it good.. computer games trained me for that?

now its in this always on state it won't go off in the event of a crash.
however its not illegal (yet?) to have non working airbags.

but VW tried their best to guilt trip me into getting it sorted, and failed..

when i sold my car i told the father of the kid who bought it. and he said.. "i hate them things anyways."?

Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

The airbags don't work on my vr, this is because i took out the airbag on the passenger side, to swap it for a glovebox. I've always driven cars without airbags, so i'm not bothered.
If the light is on, then the system has shut down, so can not go off. Depends if you are bothered about having airbags.
Mr.Seer is correct as well, if you go to vw then expect to pay

Thanks for the tips guys. I took it to Cooks in Peterborough and it was diagnosed as an intermitant faut but they couldnt tell me what the fault was. They reset the light and so far touch wood it has stayed off.

Cost ?37 for a diagnostic check

When i bought my Vr6 the airbag light came on after a couple of months. So when i had the car serviced i asked about getting it replaced and was quoted nearly 700 quid by VW for the passenger side airbag.
So with the internet in hand i searched for airbags and www.airbagsforsale.com came up and i couldnt beleive it was only a 15 minute blast up the m69.The guy quoted me 60 quid but when i got there he only charged me 50 for what looks like a brand new item.
Only took me 10 mins to install it aswell as its only 3 screws but remember to disconnect your battery else theres a chance you could set it of.
