Steering Boot replacement?
« on: 09 February 2011, 10:36 »
Need some advice....again.....

Noticed that i could hear the engine a bit too much when driving, on futher investigation, found that the steering boot (i think that is what it ias called) has split and come away from the chassis.
I have twisted and pulled it back in place but is not secure....

How do you replace/fit these? and does anyone know the part number?
1996 Mk3 GTI 8v

Thanks

It will be available from VW, will not be that easy to replace it.

do you mean the one between the bulkhead and rack? if so plentiful in scrappies as loads o mk3s turning up in there now. pas different to manual steering so make sure you get the right one!

what you have to do is pull the steering column up a bit, inside the car take the wheel and stalksoff, then undo the bolt holding the lock housing to the outer metasl tube. its a shear bolt but should come undone easily as they're usually good at self-loosening. then undo and remove the nut and bolt holding the column to the uj in the footwell, then yank the column to release it.  dont looser the spring :)

then go to bay and lift up the boot a bit then remove the bolt holding the UJ to the rack and pull it off. back inside the car pull the UJ back inside the car and the boot will come off. its a little fiddly with the engine in but it is possible
