mk2 ABF starting issues, hot and cold
« on: 08 February 2011, 12:53 »
Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and this is my first question.

I have an ABF mk2 (previously KR) on K-jet, which I did myself.

I have had some starting issues since having the car set up at The Phirm. When stone cold it takes quite a few turns (approx 10) before it starts, and then it runs lumpy for about 15 seconds, I thought this was just a ''cold'' issue, however when the engine has been up to temp and let sit for about an hour the engine will crank for about 20-30 turns. Additionally if it has been up to temp and restart within the hour it will fire straight up.

I do have an issue with the thermotime switch not working which has just deactivated the cold start valve, this has been like this for a long time. Does anyone know where to get a replacement thermotime switch?

I have noticed that when switching the ignition on the main beam indicator flickers, and when ''tinkering'' I have noticed the injectors will ''squirt'' when the ignition is switched on, is this normal?

Thanks in advance

Try searching online for the thermotime, or gsf, euro's, vwspares.co.uk etc, or google the part number and see whatyou find. I'd see what difference that makes to the starting first as the cold start inj should then work. If its still a pig get a fuel pressure gauge on it and set the system and control pressures, then co and idle speed etc.. With regards to the high beam light, not sure really, though it def shouldn't do it, rj is your man for electrical checks. the injectors shouldn't leak any fuel at all when the engine isn't running, so if its all four, its possibly somethin to do with the metering head supplying them wrongly??
