I bought my Mk4 2 months ago and didn't realise that the passenger window didn't wind down, it seemed that the window had come off the runners but to my surprise after taking off the door card and the 2nd door skin, the the regulator mechanism had collapsed, What a pain in the arse job! i contacted a few scrap yards and breakers before i called the main dealers, a guy tried to sell me the 2 metal clips for 45 quid each and another who i knew had at least 3 mk4's in his yard didn't have a clue what i was on about??
i finally found a breaker who had the door skin off a Bora which had all the necessary parts and assumed it would be a straight swap over, later to find that the motor for the windows are all programmed differently so i had to go back to the VW specialist and get my old motor back which was still in tact - after replacing the old unit back onto the door skin i proceeded to put the mechanism back into the door - after 3 attempts of trying to get everything wired in correctly i have a working passenger window! the moral of the story is if your windows break its a pain in the ass and make sure you have a good few hours and a few quid to fix it! it cost me £45 all in and more or less a days work! all said though i am a complete novice! the dealers where asking £156 exc vat for the part.
