ok, didnt realise how easy cams were to fit. Will look inyo this too. Probably get another car as a donor and sell some bits before scrapping to make some money back, and its gonna be an ongoing project over a couple of months so as long as the cost doesnt go mental, all is well. Got to get some wheels soon though, had to borrow my brothers car for the week (mk5 SDI) slllooooowww!  until I find something. Its gonna be the missus's car though when she gets her licence back, but got a while yet so I'm driving it in the meantime. Tried to push her towards a new polo, but she is set on an Alfa Mito.  :undecided: They look awsome, but its the whole Alfa reliability stereotype. Mind you, cant be any worse than a mk3.

I think this is a good idea

is it worth doing anything to the engine before it goes in? Replacing gaskets? how about a 4-2-1 manifold?  cam? or perhaps just a rebuild?? good time to replace clutch and fit a lightened flywheel

Exactly what I was thinking tbh. Dunno about cams, but deffo gaskets, clutch and lightened flywheel. Mani is an interesting idea as well! Hmmm better start having a look in to that then, Cheers Stow!

defo add a cam belt change to your list aswel, spesh if your going to cam it

Finally managed to get some transport until the golf is back on the road. My lips are sealed though as its non vag, 1200cc, and in my desperation I paid well over the odds!  Should have just got myself a valver, but its got to go to the missus once I've finished.
Anyway, as I'm now rolling, things can get moving with the Rocket!!!
Not entirely sure whats wrong, but think the headgasket/oil cooler or both. Also just noticed the fuel pump isnt priming. Relay is clicking away, but it used to be an obvious hum, and now you have to really strain to hear anything and not sure if it even is the pump I can hear. Also some mayo and oil smell in expansion tank. Took the spark plugs out that have been in about 4 months, and they are black! looked like a little water residue on them too so drained the oil, but there was no evidence of it there .
All in all, gonna be an expensive and drawn out process. So here are some pics of progress so far, a little slow as I have never done anything like this before so making sure I do it properly.

And this one is of my bumper and reinforcing bar that also now needs to be replaced, as I didnt have the tow ey in the car, so had to wrap the rope around it for the 80 miles of back roads home!

Gonna change the alternator, oil cooler, strip the engine with all new seals and gaskets, clutch, lightened flywheel, cams, cam belt and tensioner etc etc......And obviously a general spruce up of the bay and other bits.

Cheers guys. Well got a new engine on the way, yay!!!
£85 including courier for an AGG with 110k, full history, and all the ancilliaries - Thanks very much to madmanmart for that! Hopefully have it by the end of the week, although the old lump still isnt out yet.  :embarassed: Trying to do it whilst the missus is at work, and the little un is at playschool doesnt leave me much time!! Ordered cam cover gasket and bolts, sump gasket and bolts, oil breather seal, and got some more 10w-40 and G12++ from VW. Cant recommend them enough! Always give me at least 10% discount, but bloke went "meh, we can do better than that. You can have 20% off". Fair play to em.  Also got some prices for crank sensor, oil cooler, cam belt kit, and fuel pump from GSF, but forgot to ask about the clutch kit so will go back when I pick up stuff fm VW on thursday. Gonna get some paint now in preperation for the bay, and engine parts. Gonna do the wheels the same colour as the bay too. Also signed up on clubgti in preperation for flywheel lightening from hotgolf on there! May leave the cams for the time being though as I'm not too aware of em, and dont want to compromise drivability around town for not alot of return apart from higher fuel bills due to higher revs!!
