Was a couple of years ago now but it cost me £180 to have them replaced on my 8v. They didn't have to remove the head.

Are these normally the first things to go on an engine?

Don't think there's much point just doing valve stem seals. They probably got knocked out due to loose valve guides. It's probably worth waiting and getting the exhaust valve guides done at least.especially with high mileage. My engine had loose exhaust valve guides at 123k when it was rebuilt.

Usually about £15 a guide. you can lap in the valves, decoke etc. Put the stems in yourself with a deep 10mm socket. You may get some power back also.

I believe that. VW are cheaper for very very odd things that you would think cost a bomb

I disagree, I completely stopped any oil burning after replacing the seals with genuine VAG seals.

If you're a total beginner, I probably wouldn't recommend it. If you've removed the timing belt/camshaft before - then its a doddle.

Course new seals will stop oil burning. Just depends how long they'll last. What's the point of doing half a job? Especially as the heads off anyway.
