help please

over the last week my 96 16v has developed a problem. there is a strong smell off fuel in the car all the time. i can find no sign off any fuel leaks. the car feels under powered, like it is overfuelling. it is much more noticeable at idle.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Take out a spark plug, if it is black then that will confirm overfuelling.

Check your crankcase breather hoses for damage/splits, that could account for the fuel smell.

my 8v had a smell of petrol and underpowered i got it tuned at good vw garage and no smell anymore but i would leave youre car running and check all pipes as well .
