GTI cutting out and misfiring
« on: 04 February 2011, 20:37 »
I have a 97 GTI 2.0 which is having the cutting out problem. It initially started doing it a two weeks ago when driving to and from work. I replaced the coil, distributer, plugs, plug wires, cleaned the throttle body, seafoamed the car and nothing has worked. i noticed on this post that people were replacing relay 30, but i looked in my car and i dont have a relay 3, there are a couple of open spots were a relay could go. I only have the problem with it cutting out after the car is warmed up, and it is only when coming to an intersection or a stop. I have to rev the engine to 1500 rpm so it wont stall, but when it does stall i can start it up right away. I also have a problem if i floor the accelerator i get misfires on cyl 1 and 4 and the car hesitates, i let off of the gas then push it down slower and it drives normal. I have also heard that the coolant temperture sensor could be causing this problem. Also my oil light is blinking all of the time now. Please help me this is driving me crazy.

Crank speed sensor is probably causing the stalling issues. It's located behind the oil filter / cooler housing, the cable that runs to it goes brittle with age and heat and causes this exact running problem as they break down. it should cost you roughly £50 to replace.
Id also change the coolant temperature sender as well for good measure for what they cost.

that is the same thing as a Crankshaft Sensor, like this http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?A=ECHCSS924_0166847704&An=599001+101997+50074+2074015

I just bought a coolant temp sensor tonight, but which one do i replace? on my car there is a sensor of the top and the bottom of the coolant flange

It has many names and that is another one for the same thing. (link doesn't work though)

Good luck with this and my guess would be the crank position sensor too.

Out of interest when you accelerate how are you able to tell exactly which cylinders it misfires on?

I had same prob on my first GTI, was the Airflow Mass sensor, I was told on here to unplug it and see if it cures the hesitation on accelleration, With the Maff unplugged it will stall still as airflow not right. But worth a test :)

i tried unplugging the maf, and it wasn't that. I have a OBD II scanner and 1 and 4 misfire on acceleration. I replaced the coolant sensor today and so far so good, but I did not drive it around as much as i usually do on a typical day

I'd defiantly put my money on the Crank Sensor. Identical problem to mine

If you don't want to just fork out £60 for a new one, then it's worth inspecting the old one.

Here is my thread regarding it with good pictures.

Car works perfectly now

P.S It's not a fun part to change!

Thanks, I ordered the sensor from ECS this morning. I should have it by Wednesday. I will let you know how it works out. Why is it not a fun part to replace?? It looks like an easy part to replace, at least on my car.
