2001 2.0 gti golf oil in water in expansion tank

hi all can any one help me ive just bought a 2001 2.0 gti golf and have found there is oil in the water in the expansion tank.i have had it flushed through and refilled with coolant.after a 10 - 15 mile drive i have found it is back in the expansion tank.ive had mixed feelings between the oil cooler and others say it could be head gasket or cracked block.can anyone help me with this many thanks

Sounds like head gasket. have you checked the inside of the oil filler cap to see if there is any 'mayonnaise' usually a good sign headgasket has gone. also with the engine running see if you get bubbles in the coolant.

hi thanks for that,i had my local garage check it all there was a little white on the oil filler cap but a few peaple have said theres no major arrow pointing to head gasket.they put it down to condensation.they also tried a dye test again even though it did change colour slightly they said it could be down to the chemicals from the flush.some have said to disconnect the two pipes on the oil cooler and connect them together,flush the cooling ststem again and see if it still persists but im not to sure what to do for the best

Hi i was wondering if you ever got to the bottom if this problem, i have today noticed my coolant bottle to be full of oil.  The oil warning light has been coming on roughly every 200 miles or so and i have been getting fed up with the amount of oil it is drinking but there is no leakages.  I now know where the bl**dy oil has been going lol. Mine is a 2002 roughly same age as yours and the same engine etc. It only has 76,500 on the clock.
I too am told the cylinder head, the car appears to be running smoothly and isnt over heating. There is nothing coming out the exhaust, ticks over fine on idle.  She is her typical sluggish self 0-60 in about 10 painfu seconds no worse than is expected of these engines. There is a tiny bit of yellow gunk on the oil cap but its that time of year for the cold weather causing condensation to build up.  I cannnot see any other signs of it being the cylinder head can anybody advise me?

The 2.0 is noted for burning oil which I suspect is where some oil is being lost, does sound like your head gasket has failed however.

If water and oil are mixing together its either water pump or oil pump and head gasket will go very soon youbwill notice the temperature gauge get hotter AMD hotter get it sorted before it warps the head

I'm worried it may already be too late :-( i have been putting oil in more and more regularly for about 6-8weeks. She has never overheated though, i monitor the temperature because i like to make sure she is warmed up before i give her my right foot. She is in the garage now, he is running some tests before going down the route of the cylinder head.  Either way i think this is going to be a pricey fix.

Does anybody know if this is a common problem with the 2.0 gti engines?? It is standard, i know these engines aren't worth tuning and i was told this engine is bullet proof (oh the irony)
