advice needed

ive been to see a mk2 golf gti 16v,its oak green and it seems to run very well even though it has clocked up 158,000 !! should i be worried about this,the brakes seem good and it doesnt smoke.There are things wrong though which will determine whether i am to buy the car, firstly  there is leak in at the sunroof,its a steel sunroof and when it is closed the seal doesnt sit write so im pretty sure its that.What do you think?

Seconly there is a leak in the boot,not too bad but enough to cause probs! it may be leaking from the cluster light  but it would need sorting.

Thirdly the electric windows dont work at the back,it may be the motors or something like that.Also the front windows are very slow.

The car has mot but no tax and im thinking of paying ?1350,its in good condition and has bbs alloys which are mint.

Should i buy or walkaway?

Does anyone have any advice on the problems above?

Mileage shouldn't be a problem if its been looked after.
Sounds like a factory fitted sunroof in which case you may find one of the drains holes are blocked (one each side at the front edge, I usually blow compressed air through them to clear them).
Leaks at the back end could be the light clusters, sometimes aren't and can take some finding.
Electric windows could be pricey to fix unless you're lucky and you find one in the scrappy, you might be also lucky and its just the switches for the rear.

Not sure if thats a good price but I'm sure there are plenty of people here that can advise on that.

I'd walk away unless the price is more around ?1000 mark or less. What year is it? The mileage is far too high to be paying that sort of money. Theres loads of lower mileage golfs around, keep looking.

its a 1990 big bumper model. 5 door,pretty good condition.

If it helps to guide you - I am going to be selling my 1992 3dr Red Golf GTi16v between now and December. It has none of the problems that you describe of the vehicle you're looking at. It has 'done' 166000 miles - I was the second owner after 3 months and it has a full service history to date. It is newly taxed for a year and the mot is due in December. It strikes me that my car is in better condition than the one you are looking at (high mileage isn't a problem for this car if it has been regularly - and properly  - serviced) - the point I'm making is that I will be looking for around ?1100 so the price you are thinking of paying for the car you're looking at is too high given the problems it has. And in case anyone thinks I'm biased - no, my car is not currently for sale. kind regards, yt.

I think the point is by about 150,000 miles , usually most these engines will need a head rebuild. This could be expensive if you aren't a DIYer.

Look around some mate. From the sounds of it it will need more cash to sort the problems on top of the initial cost. MKII's are prone to water leaking in so it isn't a big worry but can be expensive to fix. I had been looking for a year and almost given up when i stopped at a cash point and found an f reg MKII 16 valve GTI with around 70,000 miles and full history for 995 quid. It looks and runs like a new car. They are out there just getting hard to find.

Bargains are out there, just got to look hard. Look out though there will be plenty of lemons
