when did vw first fit an immobilisor to mk3 gti's?

96 I believe. Some around that year may not have them though, depends when during that year the car was manufactured

You can tell by the key, pop it open and see if you have a chip inside but a 1994 will not have a factory immob.

if it's a genuine key then all coded keys also have a light (ok at least a push button for the light!)

Not necessarily, my spare key is coded yet doesn't have a light.
