m4 turbo problems?
« on: 01 February 2011, 22:09 »
i have just got a mk4 1.8 20v turbo gti and my friend says my turbo is feck :undecided:
ive had the car for 2 weeks and it has a forge recirc dump valve ( unknow type) and a custom side exit exhaust with only the cat as a silencer, im unsure on engine code at the mo.
i dont really know much about turbo cars but you can hear the turbo spin up in the exhaust and dump valve is not very loud when changin gear, friend says it should be quicker and says my turbo is stallin as dump valve shoudl be louder??

please any help would be great
do i need a new turbo :undecided:

you cant judge your turbo going by saying "should be quicker"

as for your dump valve if its forge 007p they are not loud at all as they are recirculating and only atmospheric dv give the load woosh sound..

is your's standard or mapped?? if its standard get it mapped to feel the real power of em standard the mk4's are very sluggish ...

if your in doubt get it on vag com and see any fault codes come up also... but if your turbo was completely fecked mate you would be blowing smoke and it will run like a 1.2 fiesta

or better yet take it to someone to have look the turbo .. id recomend PM topher off here and hell maybe book you in to have a quick look for ya.. top bloke

Hello,

It could be one of a few things, If the sound from the dump valve is a chatter then this is turbo stall, if its just one swift woosh sound the the dv is doing the job right.   You could have an underlaying fault code which is causing limp mode which works out at around 130bhp, this can be caused by sensor faults or incorrect cam timing which wont give you a light on the dash just constant low power.

I you want you can pop the car up to us and I will give it a good going over, check it with the laptop, read codes, datalogging and give it a good visual inspection so we can point you in the right direction.  As a forum member this wont cost you a penny just a packet of hobnobs..

Nick

thanks for all your kind help, a friend off mine is going to scan the car for me at the weekend to check for any pending fault codes, the dv is a whoosh noise not a chatter so all workin ok

this is my first vw and cant really afford any problems with it at the mo
but thanks for all the help and pointing in the right direction
