New sat-nav firmware and maps will support speed cameras and alerts!

I have done a thorough investigation of the latest beta of the RNS510 firmware and maps and note that the firmware will support alerts when approaching POIs (including speed and direction relevance). This means that either VW are going to provide a service or custom map discs can be created.

For a selected POI (such as a speed camera), you can specify the alert speed, direction, camera type, severity and the scale to show them on the maps. There are, alas, no examples of such alerts in the database, so I have created some test to try tomorrow. A bit hit and miss.

I am currently working out a load of stuff on this and will report back when I have news. The new DVD format makes is MUCH easier to add custom POIs, so it will be simpler to add the stuff we all want.

It may be I have to wait for the official releases, but that means I might have also had the time to create a piece of software to add the POIs quickly.

Its now all on SD cards from VW but may not be available until later this year, The possible cost of the card will be low and will only include poi no map data.

Here is a document that I wrote on how to get custom speed camera POIs on the latest 38xx RNS firmware. You can now import them from an SD card and not have to create a new DVD each time. Super quick and can be done once a week!
