oh.  Fuel leak?  If it cranks fast - i.e. sounds like it just spins - sounds like it has no compression.  Can you compression test it?

nah, only smells of fuel if its turned over, im guessing the unburnt fuel... and as for compression test, the garage claim to have done that when they had it. I will see if i can hunt down some1 with compression tester and check for myself.

yeah if you swap ecu it can be recoded with vag-com easily. its if you want another key that things get tricky

Try replacing the ignition switch.

Mine used to fire up then die straight away!

apart from the keys, what is there to re-code if its the same type (engine) ECU?

im not sure, i believe you are coding the ECU so it has same "code" as key, but i might be wrong 

and as for switch, it had been mentioned but due to the fact its sparking and fueling and turning over i didnt see how the switch could be an issue

Well, sometimes my car wouldn't start at all..then sometimes it would just cut out when i was driving and wouldn't start..one Ignition Switch later and all was good.

the immobiliser box
the keys are coded to the immobiliser box, and the immobiliser box is coded to the ecu. if you swap ecu, you can match it to the old immob box easily with vag com, though it needs to be a 'registered' copy. if you change the box or keys things get tricky, you need vag-tacho to get the skc code, and you can only get that if you have matched key in the ignition.
if you get a matched immob box and chip you can fit these to your car and old key, then do the ecu recode thing, but we are digressing from the thread a bit now

you dont need door handles i think you just take chip from key and put into yours...
