Hi From A Noob

Hi all :)

I'm after a mk2 8v GTI after wanting one for years, went to see one on Friday but it was a right dog so I'm joining up for some pointers on where to find a good 'un and what to look for. Had Peugeots for years (205 GTI's, 306 S16, 405 DT) so fancy something stronger :p

Got an Audi 80 Sport at the moment but it's not exactly country lane material

Welcome aboard

I had a 205 GTI 1.9 about a million years ago. Great car but not the best reliability ever, and that was on a car that was only a couple of years old!

MK2 8Vs are great but will feel very heavy to drive after years of Pugs. Chuck a 2.0 bottom end on it and will wake up a bit! Most unfortunately are dogs now, but this is a big forum and there will be the right people on here who will know where the best ones are, so you've done the right thing by joining.

What year of 80 Sport do you have? The early mk2 Sports (circa 1985-87) are great. The later ones were a bit hefty for the engine to cope with. Keep it and chuck a 1.8t in it.
‘25 8.5R, ‘23 8R, ‘20 8CS, ‘19 135iX, ‘19 TCR, ‘17 Ed40, ‘17 GTD, ‘15 7R, ‘13 GTI PP, ‘11 GTI, ‘09 GTI, ‘98 Ibiza Cupra, ‘05 GTI, ‘06 Polo GTI, ‘04 GT TDI, ‘05 Fabia vRS, ‘02 GTI T, ‘03 Ibiza TDI 130, ‘01 Leon 180, ‘89 mk2 16v, ‘99 Ibiza TDI, ‘96 VR6, ‘98 Ibiza TDI, ‘92 VR6, ‘88 mk2 8v, ‘92 Polo G40, ‘91 mk2 8v, ‘89 mk2 8v, 205 GTI 1.9, ‘83 mk1 GTI, ‘80 Scirocco GTI, plus some others I’ve forgotten

Hi mate :)

Yeah thats thing with pugs, awesome to drive but not built properly! My 205's were great but constant trouble, although the 1.9 I had was far better than the 1.6. The 306 S16 was better, but still trouble, and the 405 just ran and ran :)

My 80 is a '93 2.0 8v, same engine as the mk3 GTI. Gets along well enough and OK on juice for a big car, just not much fun down the back roads and a bit "old" for me. Was gonna drop a 5 cylinder in it but it's too clean and original to mess with :)

I've had loads of cars over the years (I'm 23 and the Audi is my 19th I think) and I've always wanted a GTI but never had one, its about time!

Cheers for the welcome lads :)
