Help! How to updgrade the firmware on the the RNS510
« on: 28 January 2011, 14:41 »
A bit of background....... I need to upgrade the firmware on my RNS510 so I can run version 7 of the VW Sat Nav Maps. This is so the full postcode facility will function. The firmware on the unit needs to be over 2680.

My car was in for a service today and I asked them to to do the firmware update for me. I pre-warned them I wanted these works carried out before the service was booked in and told them I didn't mine paying extra for this etc. However good old VW in Crawley just just rang me to say it is not their policy to upgrade firmware and they don't have the facility to do it. Ummm why sell customers cars with factory fitted sat nav systems if you don't have the expertise to support the product??? Personally I think VW Crawley couldn't be bothered to carry out firmware upgrade and I will write to customers services regarding this.

So in view of the above can someone provide me with a step by step guide of how to upgrade the firmware myself?

Thanks in advance.
Martin

Great advice Mike, that place never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks Mike.... I'm a bit worried tbo about bricking up the unit or causing other problems reading the comments on the my-gti site. I just spoke with VW about uprgrading the firmware myself and have been told this will invalidate the warrenty.

p.s. I forgot to mention VW service also told me they have recently had a techanical bulletin in about not being able to upgrade firmware on the RNS510 as a number of customers have been asking apparently. I've asked for a copy of the bulletin. I will keep you all posted. Not that this helps.

I could use a proper dummies guide too.
It looks like you have to download bits of the final fine via Rapidshare and burn it to a DVD/CD...and before I get to that point, I'm lost and confused.

Is there a idiots guide to making the disc?
Or do pre-made discs exist?

Glen.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....

My reversing camera threw a seven! When it came back with from the dealers a new one, they must have had to update the firmware as the camera and it's interface are subtly different and now have the speed limits on the sat nav and can use a 4GB SD card

Still can't access the 'hidden' menu or get video in motion to work by just pressing certain buttons though, never mind.
